Vedanta zinc international confirms a fatality at its underground operations

It is with great sadness that Vedanta Zinc International (VZI) confirms that an employee was fatally injured following a mine-related incident at its Black Mountain Mining: Swartberg underground operations in Aggeneys, Northern Cape, in the early hours of 1 April 2024.

Chris Griffith, Vedanta Base Metals CEO, said that Vedanta is devastated following this fatal incident as the Safety of all employees is the company’s priority: “We are devastated and saddened by this tragic event. The Health and Safety of all colleagues, direct and indirect, are our utmost priority and we take every initiative to ensure all colleagues come to work and go home Safely each and every day.”

In the interim, VZI has halted all mining activities at the Swartberg mining areas to ensure the Safety of mine workers and to allow for a full investigation into the cause of the incident.

Trauma counselling is currently underway for all employees affected by this fatal incident.

Griffith concluded: “Our focus is on ensuring that all our people return home safely to their families and that every initiative is taken to ensure “Zero Harm” and zero loss of life. Our thoughts and prayers are with Mr. Tulungani’s family, friends, and colleagues during this time of bereavement.”
